Ichigo Kurosaki is an ordinary high school student until his family is attacked by a Hollow, a malevolent spirit that devours human souls. During the attack, he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper, who is injured while protecting Ichigo's family. To save them, Ichigo accepts Rukia's offer to take her powers and becomes a Soul Reaper. As Rukia cannot regain her powers, Ichigo must hunt down the Hollows terrorizing their town. He is joined by his friends—classmates Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryuu Ishida—each with unique abilities. As they adapt to their new roles and support each other on and off the battlefield, Ichigo soon discovers that the Hollows are not the only threat to the human world.
